Pedestrian struck, killed on Montgomery Road

Updated: April 1, 2013 12:11PM

MONTGOMERY — Joy Magill went to work Wednesday with a heavy heart.

The worker at K-Mart, on Douglas Road here, already had heard that one of her work friends had been killed earlier in the day — while he was on the way to his K-Mart shift.

Fred C. Williams, 63, died after being hit by a pick-up truck about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday while crossing Montgomery Road near Douglas Road, Montgomery Police said.

Not only did Magill work with Williams, she lived just a few blocks from his house in the 1300 block of South Talma Street in Aurora.

“It’s a shock,” Magill said. “He was an awesome person. He always had a smile on his face.”

Magill said Williams lost his wife less than a year ago, and the two have a daughter who is grown.

“He walked to work every day, even though it was a long walk,” Magill said. “He was very stubborn, he never took rides from anyone. It must have been dark. He always worked at 6 (a.m.)

“Since his wife died, he really struggled to make ends meet, to keep a smile on his face. I know he was depressed, but he always managed to smile.”

Police said the pick-up truck, driven by Gerald Pritts, of the 1300 block of South Douglas Road, Montgomery, was turning west onto Montgomery Road from Douglas when he struck Williams with the front of the vehicle.

William was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center, where he died of his injuries, police said.

The Montgomery Police Department continues to investigate the accident. Anyone with information is asked to call the tip line at 630-897-8707, extension 3300.
