State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit of Aurora will be the keynote speaker Thursday for the state’s 22nd Desert Storm Remembrance Ceremony, honoring those who served during Operation Desert Storm.

“This event is our way of honoring those who served in the Gulf War, and remembering those who paid the highest price,” said Erica Borggren, director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

“We are grateful to have Stephanie Kifowit, herself a veteran of that era, to join us and offer her thoughts on service and remembrance.”

The ceremony is set for 11 a.m. at the Illinois State Military Museum in Springfield.

Kifowit, D-84th District, served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1990 to 1994. At the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton, she assisted in the activation of Marine Reserves and their deployment overseas to Iraq in 1991, for Desert Storm. She also served at Camp Foster at Okinawa, Japan.

Kifowit, a former Aurora alderman who is in her first term in the Illinois House, introduced legislation Wednesday giving taxpayers a check-off option on individual income tax forms to provide extra assistance to organizations which provide homes for veterans transitioning back into civilian life.

“Our heroes in uniform deserve access to veterans’ homes equipped to meet their physical and psychological needs,” Kifowit said. “Adding this check-off provision to income tax forms will support these homes.”

Residents interested in donating to the Veterans’ Homes Fund can check the box under section 507DD on the individual income tax form.

“One of the groups that truly deserve a properly funded support system are veterans,” said Kifowit. “Sadly, budget cuts during the past couple of years have placed an enormous burden on the homes designed to care for our former troops.”
