After spending nearly four years in the Will County Jail, convicted wife- killer Drew Peterson has a new home: Pontiac Correctional Center.
Peterson was first transferred “without incident” Friday morning to the Stateville Correctional Center near Joliet, Will County sheriff’s officials said in a statement. Hours later, he was quietly transferred to the prison in Pontiac, which has both medium and maximum security units.
The transfer came a day after the former Bolingbrook cop was sentenced to 38 years in prison for the 2004 drowning death of his ex-wife, Kathleen Savio.
Peterson, 59, received medical and psychological evaluations at an intake center at Stateville before he was sent to Pontiac.
Illinois Department of Corrections spokeswoman Stacey Solano wouldn’t say if Peterson was placed in protective custody at Pontiac.
Peterson before he was sentenced Thursday complained that he has suffered two bouts of skin cancer since his May 2009 arrest, and has developed high cholesterol and high blood pressure while being detained in protective custody at the Will County Jail.
Peterson himself said during his statement that he believes he will die in prison.
Without a successful appeal, the prison term imposed by Judge Edward Burmila will keep Peterson behind bars until he is 93 years old.
