Kane residents eligible for ComEd energy program

Kane County residents who are customers of ComEd and Nicor are eligible for a federal program to improve energy efficiency that expires in early May.
The Kane County energy and environmental committee Thursday heard a presentation from Energy Impact Illinois field organizer Liz Optholt, who is promoting the program locally.
Optholt said ComEd is trying to spread the word about the federal program designed to create jobs and promote environmental and economic sustainability in local communities.
“I think it’s an important program to at least know about,” she said.
Energy Impact Illinois currently has 286 home energy assessments scheduled, and is beginning repairs on 72 homes in Kane County, she said.
There are no income requirements to qualify for the plan. Homeowners and owners of buildings who have between two and four units can qualify. Because Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles are not supplied by ComEd, residents of those communities are not eligible for the program, Optholt said. The rest of the county is eligible.
Those who take part in the program are able to receive an energy audit from a qualified contractor for $99. They’re also eligible for rebates of up to 70 percent of the cost on air sealing and insulation work.
