An Aurora woman is facing several charges after an incident at a North Aurora dental office in which police said she illegally practiced dentistry.
Silvia Hernandez, 37, of the 400 block of Iowa Avenue, Aurora, was indicted last week by a Kane County grand jury on charges of felony theft and misdemeanors deceptive practices and unlawful practice of dentistry, according to North Aurora police.
According to police, on July 5, a woman came to North Aurora Dental Associates to report a problem with her braces. When staff at the office could find no record of the patient, the woman reported that she had paid “Dr. Silvia” to put her braces on in the office four years prior.
Staff at the dental office immediately contacted police.
Hernandez was employed at the dental office at that time, but only as a dental assistant, and she is no longer employed there, police said. Police said Hernandez does not and did not at the time have a license to practice dentistry.
The victim told police that her dental work was done in the North Aurora dental office on Sundays, a day the office is closed, police said.
On Sept. 12, another woman reported a problem with her dental work to the dental office, and staff found no record that she was a patient. The second victim told police that she had paid Hernandez to maintain her braces beginning in December 2008, and had several follow-up appointments through March 2012, always after hours or on weekends, police said.
Other appointments took place at Hernandez’s residence in Aurora, police said.
Hernandez has not yet been arrested in the case. Her bond has been set at $3,500, and an arrest warrant has been issued. Detectives are working with Hernandez’s attorney to arrange her surrender, police said.
North Aurora police said that there is no reason to believe that legitimate patients at North Aurora Dental Associates were affected in any way, adding that the office has been cooperative with the investigation.
Detectives are still investigating the case, and have asked anyone who may have been received dental treatment by Hernandez to call 630-897-8705, ext. 610.
Patients of “Dr. Silvia” are also encouraged to see a licensed dentist as soon as possible.
