About 100 gathered at the Newark American Legion Post on Sunday to welcome home a native son. A motorcade setup by Operation Welcome You Home, escorted U.S. Army Scott Fixmer and his family from his parents home in Yorkville to the post, where he was greeted by family, friends and well-wishers.
Fixmer, a 2002 graduate of Newark Community High School, recently returned home from deployment in Afghanistan, where he commanded a special operations aviation unit.
Fixmer is the son of Scott and Lisa Fixmer of Yorkville. Today, he is a resident of Ft. Huachuca, Ariz., with his wife Nikki and their children Sophia and Jacob.
Fixmer enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2003 and received a commission through the ROTC program at Western Illinois University in 2006. He completed flight school in 2007.
