Yorkville treasurer plans to resign

Yorkville City Treasurer William Powell has announced he will resign later this month.

YORKVILLE — After almost 10 years overseeing the city’s checkbook, Yorkville Treasurer William Powell will resign later this month.
Powell announced the resignation this week in a letter to the City Council. He did not attend the City Council meeting, but Alderman Carlo Colosimo, acting as mayor pro tem for the meeting, read the letter.
“We obviously thank Bill for his service,” Colosimo said.
Powell was first elected treasurer in 2003, and again in 2007 and 2011. His third and current term was due to end in 2015.
In April, Yorkville residents will vote on a referendum asking if the treasurer and city clerk positions should be appointed, rather than elected.
Powell has previously voiced support for such a move, saying the treasurer position does not need to be an elected, full-time job. He confirmed that belief in his letter this week, and said he supports the referendum to make the job appointed.
The treasurer oversees the county checkbook and makes sure bills are paid. But the city has a separate, appointed finance officer, Rob Frederickson, who helps put together the budget, oversee spending and keep track of budgetary matters. He works with City Administrator Bart Olson in performing those duties.
City officials said this week the city likely would keep the treasurer position open and have the deputy treasurer, who is a staff member, perform the duties. At the Jan. 17 Administration Committee meeting, committee members are due to discuss adjusting the deputy treasurer’s salary.
If voters approve the referendum in April, it will not take effect until the end of the treasurer and city clerk terms in 2015.
