NEWARK — The Newark American Legion Post is planning a party Sunday to welcome home a native son.
Army Capt. Scott Fixmer, a 2002 graduate of Newark Community High School, recently returned home from deployment in Afghanistan, where he commanded a special operations aviation unit.
The Newark American Legion will have an open house in his honor at 1 p.m. Sunday, and the public is invited.
Fixmer is the son of Scott and Lisa Fixmer of Yorkville. Today, he is a resident of Ft. Huachuca, Ariz., with his wife Nikki and their children Sophia and Jacob.
Fixmer enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2003 and received a commission through the ROTC program at Western Illinois University in 2006. He completed flight school in 2007.
Among the honors he has received during his service are the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Combat Action Badge, and Army Aviator Badge.
Before Sunday’s gathering, there will be a motorcade procession starting at his parent’s home at 1136 Homestead Drive in Yorkville, and ending at the Newark American Legion at 606 Ottawa St.
The Newark Post’s Sons of the American Legion will provide the meal and appetizers for the event.
