Rumors of school violence on Dec. 21 traced back to Oswego High School threat

Updated: January 17, 2013 6:35AM

Continuing investigation into rumors of violence in the Oswego School District have been traced back to a single threat at Oswego High School, according to district administrators.

On Thursday, the district emailed parents alerting them to rumors of school violence planned for Dec. 21 that have been circulating around Oswego and Oswego East high schools as well as some of the district junior highs.

On Friday, the district announced that it had confirmed that an “alleged threat to the safety of students and staff” involving a shooting was made at Oswego High School. Rumors at Oswego East High School and at the junior high schools have been identified as “purely extensions of the original alleged threat at (Oswego High School),” according to the school district.

“No information has been found to support a threat to students or staff members at any school other than Oswego High School,” the press release from the district said read.

The rumors started before the Friday morning murders at an elementary school in Connecticut.

Earlier in the week, administrators heightened security at Oswego schools after rumors of violence in anticipation of Dec. 21, the last day before winter break. It also is the date for the world’s latest doomsday scenario, based on the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar.

Heightened security, police presence and further investigation will continue at Oswego High School through next week, according to district spokesman Kristine Liptrot.

“Although we still do not believe that the threat is credible, we are still looking for the source of the information and ask students and parents to give us information if they know any more about what person or persons may have started this rumor,” Liptrot said.

Oswego police Detective Rob Sherwood said no one has been charged or arrested. He said the police department will investigate any further information officers receive.
