AURORA — The Downer Place bridge in downtown Aurora will re-open Wednesday afternoon.
Last February, Aurora held an event dubbed the “Last Blast on the Bridge” to mark the beginning of the reconstruction of the Downer bridges over the Fox River. At 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, “First Bash on the Bridge” will re-open the traffic lanes.
The event will feature a short presentation on the project’s importance and an explanation on how crews were able to complete the project in one construction season.
After the official ribbon cutting, antique vehicles will be the first to travel the eastbound lanes.
The ceremony will culminate with everyone attending being included in the recreation of an historic 1909 photo that showed hundreds of people on the original downtown bridge.
A post-event reception will be held at the River Edge Café, 14 W. Downer. Parking will be available at the parking deck near Downer and Stolp.
The bridge re-opening also signals the return to two-way traffic patterns for Downer Place and Benton Street.
Both Downer and Benton will permanently become two-way thoroughfares between Broadway (Route 25) and Lake Street (Route 31), officials said.
