JOLIET — Will County Board Democrats unanimously selected Herbert Brooks Jr. as their choice for county board chairman during a Sunday night caucus.

If the Democrats hang on to their 13-13 board split after Tuesday’s final election vote count, Brooks would most likely be the new county board chairman, replacing previous Republican Chairman Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort Township. Although Democrats and Republicans would be tied on the board, Democrat Larry Walsh, the Will County Executive, would cast tie-breaking votes. The board will be sworn in, reorganize and vote for new leaders on Dec. 3.

“I feel I’m up to it,” Brooks said after Sunday’s vote. “I think now is the time to have unity on the board.”

Brooks, 57, is pastor of St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Joliet. He’s been on the county board since 2008 and he’s been a resident of Joliet since 1962.

He said the fact that his selection was unanimous tells him the 13 Democrats on the board want to cooperate.

“I hope the 13 on the other side of the aisle are willing to do the same,” he said.
