AURORA — After a more than hour-long discussion, the East Aurora School Board voted Friday evening to rescind its just-adopted policy aiming to protect the rights of transgender students.
Hundreds of people turned out for the special meeting at the district’s School Service Center.
Only four board members were in attendance at the time of the vote, however, and all four voted to kill the policy — which they had just approved on Monday.
The board has received an onslaught of emails in the past few days over the policy, which stated that transgendered and gender non-conforming students have the right use the restroom that corresponds to their gender-related identity.
The policy also said that in most cases, transgendered students should have access to the locker room that corresponds to their gender-related identity. Classes or teams that are segregated by gender should also be open to students according to the gender that the student self-identifies with.
