Aurora man’s plan brings heat after pot plants kept too toasty

An Aurora man faces felony drug charges after police found the man warming several marijuana plants with bonfires in his backyard.
Daniel Selmon, 23, of the 800 block of Robert Street, was charged with felony unlawful possession of cannabis and misdemeanor illegal production of cannabis at 2:46 a.m. Saturday at his home.
According to police, an officer was on routine patrol when he spotted two large bonfires burning in the backyard of Selmon’s home, which is located in a residential West Side neighborhood. When the officer went to investigate, he found three large marijuana plants growing in a corner of the backyard.
Upon investigation, police learned that Selmon set the bonfires in an attempt to keep the marijuana plants warm in the cold weather.
Officers confiscated the plants, which weighed approximately 6.5 pounds, but the street value of the marijuana is unknown.
The Fox Valley has experienced a chilly end to the growing season this year, with frosts arriving several weeks before Kane County’s average first frost date, Oct. 10, according to data from the National Weather Service.
