Aurora library workers to picket Sunday

Updated: November 8, 2012 12:02PM

AURORA — About 100 library workers will stage an informational picket Sunday afternoon at the Aurora Public Library’s Eola branch.

Kim Ries of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 2283 said the employees have been working without a contract since January.

The union represents library employees who mostly are not librarians — including clerks, custodians, paraprofessionals and bookmobile drivers. Nine entry-level librarians are also represented by the union.

Ries, a department assistant to the Eola branch manager, said wages are the main sticking point. Negotiations are ongoing.

“We don’t expect lots and lots of money, but just something reasonable,” Ries said.

The picketing is planned for 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Eola Road branch, 555 S. Eola Road.

Library Director Eva Luckinbill, who is part of the negotiation team, said she does not expect the picket to interfere with library service.
The library workers also staged a picket in 2005.
